What is creativity? Are you born with it? Or, do you develop it with time? Or, is it a mix of both? In my personal opinion, it’s a mix of both. Everyone is born with a little bit of creativeness already there. Then, as time goes on, the more and more creative you will get. Say, as a toddler, the way you scribble, the colors you choose, the mess of food you make, and tend to eat, on your plate, is all creativity. As you begin to grow, and start to go to school, your creativity beings to grow into art, music, writing, dancing. Even more so if you take classes or lessons, jazz, tap, pointe, hip-hop, ballet, or even interpretive dance classes, or instrumental classes, such as flute, saxophone, guitar, or drums, singing lessons or an actual choir, they develop personality and originality which are creativity. As those traits grow, you notice more and more creativity as you get older, such as how you do your hair, the way your decorate your room or house, what you like to do in your spare time, are all little creative traits that we do every day and don’t even notice we are doing.
Creativity is originality, if you copy someone or something else, it’s no longer creative. It’s copying, no originality whatsoever. I also believe if you branched off their idea and took it to a whole other level, then it’s creative. I believe in order to have originality, you first, must develop a personality, a passion, and views on things, your likes and dislikes. Once you have all of those, you have a personality, and your personality shines through in your creativeness. Say, you hate the color yellow, love listing to pop music, and love writing. Maybe you’d write an amazing novel one day all about it. Although, the actual definition of “creativity” is the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work.
There is a major issue with creativity in today’s society though. We only appreciate famous artists, Vincent van Gogh, Steven Spielberg, Johnny Cash, William Shakespeare, other people understood their out of the box thinking that’s why they are recognized and famous. Some other songwriter could write an absolutely amazing song that only five people love, they’re not famous though, a choreographer could come up with a new dance style only a few people could do, and that dance isn’t world renowned. We only appreciate creativity to a certain extent. There are people you think are creative, and others who are not, based on your understanding and education.
For instance, I believe Nicholas Sparks is a marvelous writer over flowing with creativity. I have read almost all of his books and I don’t believe he has ever gotten an idea off of someone else’s book, their all very original and creative, although he isn’t the only writer out there like that, he is one of my favorites among many such as Nora Roberts, and John Green. But what truly is creativity? What is the extent of creativity? Or is it like the universe and there is no end?
